Although leader rounding has been shown to improve overall patient experience, this was not observed at Carilion Clinic. Shadowing and data analysis yielded insight into deficiencies in the process for preparing leaders to round. The team’s goal was to build a consistent culture of nurse leader patient rounding. A collaborative approach was used to develop and implement an innovative use of simulation; a nurse leader patient rounding simulation course. This webinar will review strategies for designing the simulation program including proper debriefing techniques, and review implementation “lessons learned.”

Learning Objectives

  • Design a nurse leader rounding simulation program by developing patient-centered scenarios with leaders and maximizing resources to implement best method for experiential learning.
  • Summarize participant perception of simulation impact on leader rounding performance including the value of debriefing and the influence of simulation on communication, leadership, and confidence.
  • Explain lessons learned during implementation including ensuring scenario applicability for a variety of settings, overcoming barriers to engagement with leaders and having a sustainability plan.
